Goff, Gibbs, and McNeill Just Gave Lions Fans a Quarter-Season Worth Bragging About
Lions fans, enjoy the bye. The first five games just handed this roster a highlight reel most teams would kill for.
Our Take: Tim Twentyman's official look at the players who have impressed through five weeks isn't hype — it's a checklist of why Detroit is 3-2 and dangerous when healthy.
Jared Goff is in MVP company. Twentyman notes he's one of only two players in NFL history — with Russell Wilson in 2019 — to throw at least 12 touchdowns with zero interceptions through five games. Goff leads the league in passing yards (1,485), sits second in touchdown passes (12), third in passer rating (111.3), and just stretched his touchdown-pass streak to 28 straight games after three scores and a rushing TD in the 45-21 win over Arizona.
Jahmyr Gibbs is on a historic tear: 504 rushing yards, seven rushing TDs, 243 receiving yards, two receiving scores — putting him with Priest Holmes, Emmitt Smith, Eric Dickerson and Jim Brown as the only players with at least 740 scrimmage yards and nine touchdowns through five games. He also passed Barry Sanders for the most touchdowns by a player before age 25 (58). Alim McNeill leads all interior defenders with 23 pressures and has 3.5 sacks. DJ Wonnum leads the team with 5.0 sacks, and Sam LaPorta's 27 catches and 316 yards are franchise highs for a Lions tight end through five games.
What to watch after the bye: Cade Mays working back into the center mix, and whether this offense keeps the ball out of harm's way when the Packers come calling. One Pride.
