Jahmyr Gibbs' Fourth NFC Player of the Week Award Shows He's the Engine of This Lions Offense

By , LionsCountry ·

Jahmyr Gibbs just picked up his fourth NFC Offensive Player of the Week award, and after what he did to Arizona, nobody's arguing.

Our Take: Gibbs isn't a complementary weapon anymore. He's the engine of this Lions offense, and the coaches should keep feeding him after the bye.

The numbers from the 45-21 win, per Pride of Detroit: 151 rushing yards and two touchdowns, plus five catches for 56 more. On the season he's tied for first in rushing touchdowns (7), first among backs in receiving yards (243) and first in yards from scrimmage (747). He also passed Barry Sanders for the most scrimmage touchdowns by a player under 25, with 57. Only Barry has more Player of the Week awards among Lions running backs.

What sold us was Dan Campbell's favorite clip, and it wasn't a highlight run. It was Gibbs picking up a blitz on the fourth-and-1 that sprang Sam LaPorta's touchdown. "He's unselfish and he's tough and he's willing to do anything for his teammates," Campbell said. A back who protects like that can stay on the field on every down, and that's what makes this offense hard to defend.

Detroit goes into the bye at 3-2. When they come back, the plan is simple: put the ball in Gibbs' hands and let him go.
