Kerby Joseph's 21-Day Window Is Open: The Lions' All-Pro Safety Is Back at Practice
Lions fans, the day Kerby Joseph's clock starts is here. Dan Campbell announced Wednesday that the All-Pro safety is returning to practice, opening his 21-day window to come off the reserve/physically unable to perform list (via ProFootballTalk and the Associated Press).
How the window works
Detroit now has three weeks to move Joseph to the active roster. If he isn't activated in that stretch, he isn't eligible to play this season, per the AP.
How we got here
Joseph hasn't played since Oct. 12, 2025. His left knee didn't respond well to treatment, he played just six games last year, and the Lions put him on injured reserve in December, per the AP and MLive. Even in those six games he picked off three passes. In 2024 he led the NFL with nine interceptions and made first-team All-Pro (via ProFootballTalk). Last week Campbell said he expected Joseph back this season (our Oct. 20 Take). Today is the next step.
"He's put in a lot of work. It's been a long, hard road for Kerby," Campbell said, adding that "he's passed every test to this point" and that "we've still got a ways to go. But this is a step in the right direction" (via ProFootballTalk).
Our Take: This is the best news Detroit's defense has had all year, and that's saying something after Brian Branch picked off a pass in his return against Green Bay (via MLive). Picture Branch near the line and Joseph patrolling deep again. But Campbell is right to go slow. This knee has fooled everybody before, so the real test is how it holds up after back-to-back days of pounding.
What's next: Don't expect him Sunday when the undefeated Vikings (6-0) visit Ford Field to face the 4-2 Lions (1 PM ET, FOX). PFT says that's unlikely. Watch the practice reports. Detroit then goes to Miami and plays New England in Germany, so the window runs through that whole stretch.
