Lions 20, Packers 17: Jake Bates Wins It at the Gun as Amon-Ra St. Brown Goes for 153

By , LionsCountry ·

The Detroit Lions beat the Green Bay Packers 20-17 at Ford Field on Sunday on Jake Bates' 22-yard field goal as time expired. Detroit improves to four wins and two losses and stays unbeaten at home (3-0). Green Bay falls to four wins and three losses.

How it happened: Jared Goff hit Jameson Williams for a 16-yard touchdown in the first quarter, and Jordan Love answered with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Tucker Kraft. Bates' 40-yard field goal gave Detroit a three-point lead at halftime. Love found Josh Jacobs for a 25-yard touchdown early in the third quarter, and Goff and Williams connected again from 10 yards out to put Detroit back in front. Trey Smack tied it with a 43-yard field goal with 7:10 left. Detroit got the ball back and went 71 yards in 10 plays over the final 3:21, and Bates won it on the last snap.

By the numbers: Goff went 22-of-32 for 303 yards and 2 touchdowns with no interceptions. Amon-Ra St. Brown caught 9 passes for 153 yards, and Williams had 5 catches for 91 yards and both touchdowns. Jahmyr Gibbs carried 29 times for 116 yards. Detroit outgained Green Bay 415 to 324 and ran for 119 yards to the Packers' 60. Brian Branch had an interception, and Jack Campbell led the defense with 11 tackles. Detroit lost two fumbles, and Green Bay turned it over once. Love threw for 274 yards and 2 touchdowns with an interception, and Smack made 1 of 3 field goals.

Our Take: Detroit was the better team for most of the day and nearly gave it away with two lost fumbles. What matters is the last drive: with the game tied, Goff, St. Brown and Gibbs moved it 71 yards and let Bates finish it. A division win at home over Green Bay is worth a lot in the NFC North race, and holding the Packers to 60 rushing yards is a sign this defense is getting healthier with Branch back.

Injuries: We'll update with any in-game injuries once the team reports them. Ennis Rakestraw Jr. was listed questionable (ankle) on ESPN's report.

What's next: The Lions host the Minnesota Vikings next Sunday, Nov. 1, at 1:00 PM ET on FOX.
